New Exterior Kitchen Started

The last week of March we started the building of a new kitchen for the hospital. This is a separate area outside behind the main kitchen where the daily main meal called Nshima is cooked over an open fire. This is also where there is a clay brick oven and each day bread rolls are baked for the patients using the old fashioned way of heating a brick oven with the coals from the firs, the result is excellent bread rolls each day.

This area is the worst of the hospital and we hope to have a new building completed in 2 month’s time.

Flying Photographer

In March we had a short visit from Andrew Galister from Canada who had some modern photography equipment for taking videos and pictures. The last day of his visit Larry Franklin took him in the plane on a few circuits of the mission and area and through an open door, they had removed the rear door, he was able to take excellent shots of the mission.

Sewing Project

In conjunction with the ART program for patients who have been left without any source of income to support their families, we have launched a Income Genrating Sewing Project. There are 12 people trained so far to sew school uniforms, bags and some other items which are then sold and the funds distributed to help them. A trainer was brought in for 2 months to teach them and all the sewing machines were purchased, building rehabilitated and all is in place and the project is going very well. Boston Mbilikita is the one in charge and is doing a very commendable job.

Appreciated help from hard working Team Workers

In February and March Chitokoloki had a number of talented and hard working visitors who came to help in different areas of the mission. They made great improvements in electrical aspects, added solar panels to the hospital and houses, fixed existing wells and added new ones plus many other challenges. Their help was very much appreciated and they were all kept very busy and accomplished a lot of work in the time they were at Chitokoloki.

Chitokoloki Pre-school

For the last few years Chitokoloki Mission has run a pre-school for 5 and 6 year olds. The teacher Molly Nkanza is doing a great job in teaching the kids English as well as many academic subjects, Bible verses and stories, choruses and basic skills.

Recently the children were provided with new uniforms which look very smart. Any visitors that come to Chitokoloki will always receive a warm singing welcome if they stop by the school.

Dr. Desmond Norris hard at work again

We are so thankful that Desmond and Elizabeth Norris have once again returned to help at Chitokoloki. For the past number of years, every year they have come to help and are part of the team that keeps the hospital running as well as it does. When Des is not helping in theater with surgery he is always kept very busy using his engineering skills in repairing medical equipment, installing new fixtures and equipment and has been a tremendous help in many ways.

Philip Grainger’s 6th visit to Chitokoloki

Once again Chitokoloki Mission has greatly benefited by the help of skilled friends from overseas. For the sixth time Philip accompanied by his wife Jennie have returned to help in the improvement of facilities at the hospital. Philip is a skilled cabinet maker and most of all the excellent cabinets, cupbords, furnishings were built by him in various areas of the hospital. Jennie has also worked hard in the helping of opening and sorting oc boxes of clothes and other items. Their help has been very much appreciated.

Much Appreciated Mechanic Visit

On October 15th Phil Horne arrived at Chitokoloki from Ireland and once again as in many previous visits he has been a tremendous blessing and help. It seems that the number of vehicles and equipment needing to be maintained is always increasing and Phil has been kept busy with trucks, tractors, engines, mills, pick-ups and many other “challenges”. We greatly appreciate his willingness to come and help and also the very hard work and so much that was done during the 6 weeks that he was at Chitokoloki.

Surgical workload continuing to increase

During the last half of the year the number of patients coming for surgery continues to increase. Recently there have been several special weeks allocated for specific types of surgical cases which include orthopaedics, plastic, cataracts, fistula and they have even done a couple hip replacements.

The above is all in addition to the regular work load and the emergencies and also visits are done on a regular basis almost evert week to one of the other mission hospitals for surgical cases.

Chitokoloki Plane has been busy

The Cessna 206 plane that arrived in Zambia near the end of last year was finally after many delays registered and approved by the DCA and started flying right after all approvals were received in late December.

Since the first of the year it has flown over 650 hours and has been a tremendous help to visitors, missionaries, patients and also done numerous medical trips between Chitokoloki and the other mission hospitals.

Not having a pilot based at Chitokoloki we have greatly appreciated the help of several who have undertaken the responsibility of piloting and we are indebted to them, Philip Grove, Larry Franklin and Don Amborsky.
